Our History is Not "Awesome"

“Timeless” is a time travel science fiction series currently streaming on Prime. Its premise is that a terrorist has stolen a time machine and traveled into the past to alter the history of the United States and possibly the world. One of three protagonists is a black male computer specialist and time machine pilot. Their first mission in a prototype of the stolen time machine is to 1937. When the pilot is told that he is essential and must go, he replies, “I am black. There is literally no place in American history that would be awesome for me.”

“Awesome” would be at the bottom of a list that describes conditions in the United States for minorities and women since its founding. The founders were humans and knew that what they created was not “awesome” for all – especially Native Americans, Blacks, women, or anyone not considered white – but did strive to improve the union to be “more perfect”. Conditions were improving. Then along comes Trump.

Trump and his cult don’t have a time machine. But they are determined to return the United States to the 1930s and even earlier – when women couldn’t vote or control their own bodies, when Jim Crow laws terrorized Blacks, when anyone not white was not welcome, where anyone not conforming to their perverted views of what constitutes normal is degraded, humiliated, and attacked.

Trump’s methods are to emulate other despots and dictators knowing that the checks and balances in our Constitution move at a glacial pace. He will lie, misrepresent, and break the law at every opportunity. He has ordered ICE agents to ignore the rule of law. And ironically, his policies are negatively affecting his supporters too.

Protest and resist – peacefully – at every opportunity. Tyrants expect submission. Don’t give it.
